This is a vintage Hollohaza porcelain squirrel figurine from 1980, finished in a bold, glossy red-orange glaze that really pops on a shelf. The sculpt has that lively, tail-up pose squirrels are known for, with neat hand-painted eyes and a small white-and-green oval base. It measures 5.5 inches tall, 2 inches wide, and 4 inches long (about 13.75 x 5 x 10 cm). The condition is Near Mint, with a clean surface and only the lightest shelf wear under the base. At about 46 years old, it’s solidly vintage and not something you see every day, especially this crisp and bright. Compact and cheerful, it fits right into Mid Century Modern and Scandinavian-inspired spaces.
Hollohaza is one of Hungary’s oldest porcelain makers, working since 1777 in the village of Hollóháza. The factory became known for sleek, stylized animal figures and vibrant glazes, particularly from the mid-century through the 1980s. Figurines were slip-cast in porcelain, hand-finished, and fired multiple times for that durable shine. Most pieces carry a backstamp with the bird emblem, “Hollohaza Hungary,” and often “1777.” Animals from the 1980 era, like this squirrel, are increasingly harder to track down in Near Mint shape, which adds to their appeal. Collectors like the playful, modern lines, and these pieces display well among other European porcelains.
