This is a Herend Rothschild Bird bud vase from around 1960, hand-painted porcelain in near mint shape. It stands 6 inches tall and about 3 inches across at the widest point, with a slim neck and a 3 inch base. The teardrop body shows two lively songbirds and a fluttering butterfly, finished with a thin gold rim. The glaze is bright, colors crisp, and gilding clean, with no chips or cracks noted. At roughly 66 years old, it’s a true vintage accent that still feels fresh and ready for a single stem.
Herend, founded in Hungary in 1826, is known for hard‑paste porcelain painted entirely by hand. The Rothschild Bird pattern began in the 19th century and, by legend, honors a Rothschild necklace found in a tree by birds. Pieces are freehand painted and fired multiple times, then edged with 24k gold, so no two are exactly alike. Bud vases from the 1950s–60s weren’t made in large numbers, and clean survivors like this are sought by collectors. At this size it’s easy to display, and the cheerful birds and insects fit both classic china cabinets and modern, minimalist shelves.
