This small porcelain ring tray is a Herend Apponyi Pur Pur Purple piece from around 1960. It’s an oval jewelry plate with a 1 inch profile, about 3 inches wide by 4 inches long, handy for keeping rings or earrings by the sink or bedside. The white ground is hand painted with the bold pink‑purple Apponyi bouquet and finished with fine gold trim that’s still bright. Condition is near mint: the glaze is glossy, the rim gilding is crisp, and there are no chips, cracks, or repairs. At roughly 66 years old, it’s true mid‑century vintage and not easy to find this clean.
Herend, founded in 1826 in Hungary, is known for hand‑painted hard‑paste porcelain and gold accents. The Apponyi pattern is a simplified version of the older Indian Basket design, created for Count Albert Apponyi in the 1930s. Purpur denotes the purple colorway; the motif also appears in green, blue, and orange. Each piece is painted and gilded by hand and fired multiple times, so even small trays show real craftsmanship. Mid‑century Herend remains sought after by collectors, and compact vanity trays turn up less often than dinnerware. Hand‑wash only and avoid harsh cleaners to protect the 24k gilding.
