This is an antique Herend Rothschild Bird porcelain egg trinket box, a genuinely vintage piece, hand painted and edged with gold. Made in 1930, it’s about 96 years old and remains in near mint condition. The white, egg-shaped lid shows a perching songbird with leaves, plus the pattern’s dainty butterflies and insects. It’s a two-piece lidded box with a smooth, bright glaze and a snug join. Colors are sharp, the gilded lines are intact with only the faintest wear, and there are no chips or cracks to note. It measures roughly 4 inches high, 4 inches wide, and 6 inches long—ideal for rings or keepsakes.
Herend is Hungary’s storied porcelain maker, founded in 1826 and known for hand-painted tableware. The Rothschild Bird pattern dates to the mid-1800s and was created for the Rothschild family; a tale says a missing pearl necklace was found in a birds’ nest, inspiring the perched birds and fluttering insects. Every piece is freehand painted and finished with gold, so details and colors vary slightly from artist to artist. Interwar examples like this 1930 egg were produced in smaller numbers, making them desirable today. Look for the green Herend shield and RO marks underneath to verify.
