This is a Turkish vintage brass letter opener from around 1950, shaped like a slim dagger and dressed with turquoise cabochons. It’s near mint, with crisp casting and only light, honest patina that shows off the gold tone. The piece measures about 7 inches long, 1 inch wide, and roughly 1 inch tall thanks to the raised stones and ornament. The gently curved “blade” slips under an envelope flap cleanly, while the handle has a comfortable grip with little flourishes and a serpent-like finial. At roughly 76 years old, it’s an eye-catching desk tool that doubles as a decorative accent.
These midcentury Turkish letter openers weren’t big-brand items; most were workshop or bazaar pieces influenced by Ottoman kilij and yatagan forms. Brass was usually sand-cast, then hand-chased and dotted with turquoise glass or stone for color. Many were made for the post‑war tourist trade and exported in the 1950s, so examples turn up, but finding one this complete and in near mint condition is getting uncommon. Keep the warm patina—just wipe with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive polish. It’s a collectible little slice of Anatolian craft, practical on today’s desk and a tidy bit of history to pass along.
