This is a Vintage Italian Volterra Alabaster Trinket Box dating to around 1960. It has a smooth, creamy ivory tone with natural cloud-like veining, and a simple rectangular profile with a gently domed lid. The lid lifts on a slim brass-toned hinge. It measures 2 inches (5 cm) high, 3.5 inches (8.75 cm) wide, and 5.5 inches (13.75 cm) long—handy for rings, watches, or keepsakes without taking much space on a dresser. Condition is near mint, with just the lightest hints of age you’d expect from a mid‑century piece. At roughly 66 years old, it’s a true vintage accent that still feels clean and timeless.
Volterra is the heart of Italy’s alabaster craft, a Tuscan tradition reaching back to Etruscan times. Local quarries supply soft, fine-grained gypsum that artisans cut, turn, and hand‑polish to a warm satin sheen, often finishing boxes with brass hardware and felted bases. During the 1950s–60s, workshops in and around Volterra exported these boxes worldwide as elegant souvenirs and gift-shop staples; each piece is unique because the stone’s veining never repeats. Examples survive, but near mint boxes from this era and size are getting harder to find. Care is simple: keep it dry, avoid acids and cleaners, and dust with a soft cloth.
