This is an antique Herend bird figurine, a handpainted goldfinch made around 1942. Perched on a stump, it shows orange and violet around the head, inky wings, and soft feather shading. The glaze is bright, and the detailing around the eye and beak is crisp, showing the careful brushwork you expect from Herend. Near mint, with no obvious chips, cracks, or color loss—just a clean, well‑kept piece. At about 84 years old, it’s a true vintage survivor from a difficult era.
Herend, the famed Hungarian porcelain house founded in 1826, is known for shaping and painting every piece by hand. Their artisans form the figure, apply underglaze and overglaze colors, and fire it several times for depth and shine. The brand became a favorite of European courts in the 19th century and is celebrated for naturalistic motifs like the Queen Victoria and Rothschild Bird patterns, as well as small animal and bird sculptures. Pieces from the early 1940s were made in smaller numbers due to wartime constraints, which makes survivors like this goldfinch more desirable to collectors. Marks typically include the Herend shield and a model number, and value rides on colorway, artistry, and condition—this one checks the right boxes.
