This vintage Ajka Crystal brandy snifter shows off a deep purple, cut‑to‑clear bowl that sparkles when it hits the light. The hobstar, crosshatch, and fan cuts are crisp, and the clear, star‑cut foot gives it a steady, elegant stance. It’s shaped for warming cognac in the hand and focusing the aroma, so it’s as practical as it is pretty. The glass is from 1980 and is in Near Mint condition, with only the faintest signs of handling and no chips or clouding, making it a lovely piece for sipping or for display in a bar cabinet.
Ajka Crystal, also known in Hungary as Ajkai Kristály, has been making mouth‑blown, hand‑cut lead crystal since the late nineteenth century. The company is famous for richly colored cased glass that’s cut to reveal clear windows, a look that reads luxurious without feeling fussy. Amethyst, cobalt, ruby, and emerald were staple hues through the 1970s and 1980s, and many pieces were exported to shops around the world. Snifters like this typically use 24% lead crystal for weight and sparkle, and each one varies slightly because the cuts are done by hand. Care is simple: hand‑wash, avoid dishwashers, and store where the rim won’t rub.
