This vintage Ajka Crystal brandy snifter is a gorgeous cut‑to‑clear piece in a vivid emerald overlay, dating to 1980 and kept in near mint shape. The bowl shows deep lattice and fan cuts that break through the green layer to reveal brilliant clear crystal beneath, catching light from every angle. A sturdy, short stem leads to a starburst foot, giving it that satisfying, weighty feel you want in a snifter. It’s perfect for swirling cognac or brandy, and just as happy living on a bar cart or in a cabinet as a standout display piece with crisp, sharp cutting and no notable wear.
Ajka Crystal comes from the Hungarian town of Ajka, where the glassworks began in 1878 and built a reputation for richly colored, mouth‑blown, hand‑cut lead crystal. Their cut‑to‑clear technique uses a colored outer layer over clear crystal, then artisans wheel‑cut patterns to expose the brilliance underneath. Classic colors include emerald, cobalt, ruby, and amethyst, and many pieces were exported to top department stores and luxury retailers. Most Ajka pieces meet full‑lead standards for that signature sparkle and ring. Because each one is finished by hand, slight variations are normal and prized by collectors, especially in the bold green seen here.
