This piece is a vintage Ajka Crystal brandy snifter in a sunny yellow cut‑to‑clear finish, kept in near‑mint shape. The bowl shows crisp diamond crosshatching and fans that catch the light, with a ring of little rosettes near the rim. The color is a warm amber‑gold overlay that fades into clear crystal where the cutting reveals the pattern. It sits on a faceted stem and a starburst foot, giving it a sturdy, elegant feel in the hand. Made around 1980, it was mouth‑blown and hand‑cut, perfect for swirling cognac or armagnac and letting the aroma open up.
Ajka Crystal, also known as Ajka Kristály of Hungary, has been crafting fine lead crystal since 1878. The factory is famous for richly colored overlays—ruby, cobalt, emerald, amber, and amethyst—cut back to sparkling clear designs. Pieces from the late twentieth century were often exported to upscale shops worldwide, and many were produced in small batches by master cutters. Collectors prize the weight, ring, and precision of the patterns, which reflect old‑world skills. This line of brandy snifters shows why Ajka is sought after: it’s decorative on a shelf, but built to be used. Hand wash only, always avoid dishwashers and sudden temperature swings.
