This Herend Apponyi large coffee cup and saucer from 1980 is a graceful, hand‑painted set ready for cappuccino, coffee, or tea. The cup has a softly scalloped rim and an elegant, scroll handle, with the classic raspberry‑pink floral motif blooming across the side and echoed on the saucer. Both pieces are edged with real gold for a warm, subtle shimmer, and the porcelain shows Herend’s signature basketweave relief near the rim. It’s the kind of cup that feels special without being fussy—nice enough for display, but sturdy enough to enjoy for a quiet morning or a tête‑à‑tête.
Herend, founded in 1826 in Hungary, is one of the world’s best‑known makers of hand‑painted, hard‑paste porcelain. Every piece is decorated by a trained artist and fired multiple times to set the colors and gilding. The Apponyi pattern—also called Chinese Bouquet—was created in the early 20th century at the request of Count Albert Apponyi as a simplified take on Herend’s older “Indian Basket” design. It remains a collector favorite, produced in several colors including green, blue, and raspberry. Look for the Herend shield mark and painter’s initials on the underside. Care is simple: gentle hand washing is best, and avoid the microwave because of the gold trim.
