This is a Herend Apponyi Porcelain teacup and saucer in the Green Chinese Bouquet pattern, model 724-2 Large, made in 1970. Standing 2.5 inches tall and measuring 3.5 inches across (width, length, and diameter; about 6.25 cm by 8.75 cm), it shows the classic scalloped rim, raised basketweave band, and a finely scrolled handle, all finished with bright hand-applied gold. The hand-painted green floral spray pops against snow-white porcelain. Condition is near mint: no chips, cracks, or staining, and the gilding is still crisp. At about 56 years old, it’s a vintage piece that’s elegant yet sturdy for tea-time use.
Herend of Hungary has made porcelain by hand since 1826, shaping, firing, and painting each piece in-house. The Apponyi, also called Chinese Bouquet, is a simplified take on the older Indian Basket motif, created for Count Albert Apponyi in the 1930s. Green is the signature colorway, trimmed in 24k gold, and collectors know the osier basketweave texture and painter’s marks underneath. Model 724-2 denotes the larger teacup used in services. While the pattern is produced today, examples from the 1960s–70s are harder to find in clean condition, making a 1970 near mint set like this desirable and rare in circulation.
