This delicate little find is a Herend porcelain baby shoe, hand painted with bright flowers, a butterfly, and trimmed with gold. It was made in 1970 and comes in Near Mint condition, showing crisp paint and a clean glaze with only the faintest shelf wear. It’s tiny—about 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall, 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, and 1.5 inches (3.75 cm) long—so it fits nicely in a curio cabinet or on a vanity as a ring holder. At roughly 56 years old, it’s a true vintage keepsake, and these small novelty shapes from Herend don’t turn up as often as plates or figurines, so they’re always a treat to spot.
Herend, founded in 1826 in Hungary, is famous for fine, hard‑paste porcelain that’s fully hand painted and rimmed in real gold. The butterflies and garden blooms echo the celebrated Queen Victoria pattern introduced after the 1851 Great Exhibition, when the queen placed a big order and lent her name to the design. Every piece is painted by an individual artisan and fired multiple times, which is why the colors look so vivid. Gift items like this shoe were produced in smaller numbers, making them a bit rarer. Care is simple: dust gently and avoid dishwashers to keep the gilding bright.
