This is a Herend porcelain woodpecker figurine, modeled as a Great Spotted Woodpecker perched on a stump. Hand-painted plumage in black, white, and warm coral with a touch of mossy green brings the bird to life, and the glossy glaze highlights the crisp beak and alert eye. Made around 1940 and kept in Very Good Plus condition, it shows only light shelf wear with no noticeable chips or cracks. It’s a small, characterful piece that sits on a shelf or desk and adds a bright, nature-loving note to any space.
Herend Porcelain Manufactory of Hungary, founded in 1826, is celebrated for hand-painted hard‑paste porcelain collected by European royalty and everyday enthusiasts alike. Artisans train for years; each figurine is molded, hand-finished, bisque fired, glazed, decorated with mineral pigments, and fired again for lasting color and shine. Beyond the famous Fishnet decoration, Herend has a strong tradition of naturalistic wildlife, and bird studies like this carry an Art Nouveau influence with graceful lines and lifelike poses. Collectors favor sharp painting at the beak and tail, a clean glaze, and a clear Herend backstamp with painter’s marks. To care for it, dust with a soft brush and keep it out of direct sunlight and harsh cleaners.
