This is a Herend Rothschild trinket tray from around 1970, a small round porcelain coaster/dish measuring 4 inches across, 1 inch high, with a 4 inch width and length to match its circular shape. It’s near mint, with a bright gilt rim and a crisp hand‑painted scene of two birds on a branch, the familiar necklace draped between them. The scalloped edge adds a gentle look and the glossy glaze shows barely any wear. Use it as a bedside ring holder, a catchall for keys, or a coaster. At roughly 56 years old, it’s solidly vintage yet easy to enjoy every day.
Herend, founded in 1826 in Hungary, is known for hand‑painted hard‑paste porcelain. The Rothschild Bird pattern debuted around 1860 and recalls the tale of a lost Rothschild necklace found in a tree—hence the birds with pearls. Every piece is painted by hand, so colors and brushwork vary slightly, and many bases carry painter’s marks with the Herend Hungary stamp. 1970s production came in smaller runs than today, and clean gilding like this is harder to find. The pattern is still made, but vintage trays from this era are the ones collectors chase because they’re practical, charming, and undeniably classic.
