This is a vintage brass stamp box in ornate French style, made around 1940 and shown here in Near Mint condition. The lid is chased with scrolling decoration and the word TIMBRES, French for stamps, and it sits on four little feet. The brass has a warm, even patina with light age speckling, the kind of glow you only get after decades. It’s a tidy size for a writing table—about 1 inch tall, 4 inches wide, and 2.5 inches long (2.5 x 10 x 6.25 cm). At roughly 86 years old, it’s a mid‑century desk companion, and pieces this crisp are getting hard to find.
While there isn’t a visible maker’s mark, boxes like this came from French workshops that specialized in cast brass desk accessories—inkstands, letter racks, and stamp boxes—often in Art Nouveau revival patterns. Their job was simple: keep loose gummed stamps clean, flat, and ready to use, sometimes separating denominations under a hinged lid. Collectors prize the weighty feel, raised ornament, and old‑world lettering. Because most were handled daily, survivors are dented or heavily tarnished; a Near Mint example with sharp detail and steady feet is scarce. A charming keepsake for letter writers and office decor lovers.
