This piece is a vintage Ajka Crystal brandy snifter dating to around 1980, in rich, intense cobalt blue, cut to clear. The balloon bowl shows crisp crosshatch diamonds and fan cuts that throw light around the room, set over a clear faceted stem and starburst foot. It feels weighty and gives a ring when tapped. Condition is near mint, with sharp cutting, clean surfaces, and no chips or haze—great on a bar cart. The rounded bowl invites a slow swirl to open cognac or brandy, and it displays beautifully under cabinet lighting.
Ajka Crystal is made in Hungary and is respected for mouth-blown, hand-cut lead crystal in particularly deep jewel tones—blue, ruby, emerald, and amethyst—often produced as cut-to-clear like this example. Artisans lay a thin colored layer over clear crystal, then wheel-cut patterns to reveal flashes of clear beneath. Typical Ajka glass carries about 24% lead oxide for extra sparkle and that satisfying resonance. The 1980s were a strong export period internationally, so many pieces were sold through department stores and gift shops, sometimes with an Ajka Hungary sticker. Collectors watch for even cutting, smooth rims, and a consistent overlay. Hand wash; avoid dishwashers and temperature shocks to preserve brilliance.
